What You Can Do
Explore the powerful features that make our music generation tools stand out
Scales & Progressions
Separating scales and progressions allows you to use a progression you love, but in different keys. Or use a scale you love, but with different progressions. Starts is designed to write a very wide variety of music.
Multiple Algorithms
For each instrument, you can pick different algorithms to generate music. Each instrument has its own settings to play with as well, giving you complete creative control.
Quick Audition
Hear the music quickly and simply to make decisions fast. Starts is designed to give you ideas. A new start is quick to generate, so feel free to generate a lot.
MIDI Export
Download as MIDI, ready for your DAW. Choose from a MIDI file with all the instruments, or separate files for each instrument for maximum flexibility.
Advanced Options
Fine-tune settings to really define what you want. Starts uses music theory to make many settings sound good. Break the rules you normally follow, and see what happens.
Smart Regeneration
If you don't like a certain instrument's music, you can re-generate that specific instrument. Useful for when that one bassline doesn't quite tickle your fancy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our music generation tools
Does this use AI?
Nope, no AI involved. Our algorithms are all normal code. Using AI for these purposes might get us "better" results faster, but we wouldn't learn anything about music. And don't get us started on the ethics.
How do starts work?
Starts uses music theory based algorithms to produce cohesive sections of music. Use them as a starting point, or as a way to kickstart the next section in your song. Easily browse through them when thinking about the song you want to write, and pick the one you like to write that song faster.
What file formats are the starts delivered in?
Midi. Options are available to download the midi as a single file, or with all the instruments as separate files.
Do I own the rights to the generated melodies?
Yes, you have full ownership and royalty-free rights to the melodies generated by our service. You can use them in your projects, compositions, and productions without any restrictions. We use chance and music theory to create the melodies, you make them into songs.
How long does it take to generate a start?
Microseconds. Generation is very fast. It takes longer for the server to send you the notes, then it does to generate it. Ideally you hit generate once and it's perfect, but that isn't the case. Hit generate, judge what is generated, re-generate if it isn't good.
What features are planned?
On launch there will be "Starts", which is a tool to generate and edit melodies, chord progressions, basslines and drums. While we have a lot of ideas for other things, we do want your input. What do you think could make this more useful?
Will this cost?
Yes, but free to use features will be available. In order to support this website, there will be a way to pay us. Assuming the costs do not rise, and development makes the service better, and introduces more features, the basic "Starts" function available should be free.
Got an idea for us?
We want ideas, suggestions, that you feel would benefit musicians. From "I would like a lead melody algorithm that writes guitar riffs", to "add this scale please", we appreciate the ideas. We have a certain view of music, and are blind to many aspects, and we hope a community will help us see things we missed.
